Opposition wants speaker of parliament sacked

The opposition parties want Speaker of the Parliament Pavol Paška (Smer) to be fired for his handling of the social insurance law, the daily Hospodárske Noviny wrote on November 7.

The opposition parties want to initiate a special parliamentary session by the end of this month. However, they do not have enough votes for it without the support of coalition MPs.

The opposition takes issue with Paska's interference in the amendment to the social insurance law, approved by the parliament in a chaotic vote with two contradictory amending proposals.

The draft bill was supposed to be published on the internet within three days after the vote. Paška admitted that he ordered the legislative department to ignore parliament’s vote and publish a version that did not contain Radičová´s proposal.

The ethnic Hungarian SMK does not share the enthusiasm of its opposition partners, SDKÚ and KDH, saying it has joined the proposal "with a heavy heart."
