Bratislava FOOD FESTIVAL:

EVEN as Bratislava Castle is undergoing reconstruction, its gardens will host the first edition of the Slovak Food Festival between May 21 and 23. The event promises to be equally attractive for families, gourmets and amateur chefs. The festival’s attractions include tasting of various delicacies and cooking instructions – for seafood and other kinds of fish as well as grilling of steaks. Thai food and tea, quality wines, as well as a cooking competition on Saturday between media representatives round out the activities. From Friday at noon to Sunday at 18:00 you can visit the festival for free. Food vouchers can be purchased so that you to try the delicacies on offer. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Chamber Days of J. N. Hummel – Within the festival honouring Johann N. Hummel, a famous composer and virtuoso born in Bratislava, this concert features pianist Madoka Inui from Austria playing the works of Hummel, R. Schumann and F. Chopin.

LIVE MUSIC: Korpiklaani – The Finnish folk-metal band sings in both Finnish and English and focuses on nature, Lappish mythology and alcohol. Virrazstok from Hungary and Arkona from Russia will also play.

EXHIBITION: One Step Forward – This exhibit at the gallery of the Academy of Art combines the works of eight students who work in three different university studios. Although the results might suggest quite the opposite, the eight artists have shared views.

EXHIBITION: Sizyfova láska – In this exhibition called Sisyfo’s Love, Mira Gáberová focuses on video-painting performances and re-working of her older creations by other artists.

TRADITIONAL CRAFTS: Spa Island in Piešťany will take on a historical aura on the weekend of May 21-23 as a traditional market. Artists and craftsmen from across Europe will exhibit their works in nearly 200 stands between the Glass Bridge and the Harmony Music Pavilion. The Pavilion will host traditional folk arts and crafts as well as cultural events.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: Slovenský komorný orchester Bohdana Warchala – The Slovak Chamber Orchestra of Bohdan Warchal has become one of the most popular orchestras performing classical music. This spring it plays Mozart, Shostakovich and Suk in various Slovak towns and cities.

MUSIC:
SPRING Jazz Days move to Košice on May 21 where the world-famous Icelandic funk band Mezzoforte, known especially for its hit Garden Party, performs along with Boboš Procházka and the eastern Slovak group All From East Gappa Big Band. Mezzoforte has played in Slovakia repeatedly, with much success. The Košice part of Spring Jazz Days will start at 19:00 in Infinity Aréna; a ticket costs €17. CLASSICAL MUSIC: Košická hudobná jar – The Košice Musical Spring has brought several interesting artists, this time it is the Symphonic Orchestra Miskolc (Hungary) conducted by Zbyněk Müller (Czech Republic) and hosting Levente Soós from Romania playing R. Wagner, R. Strauss, and C. Saint-Saëns.

Spišská Nová Ves


IRISH DANCE: Lord of the Dance – The world-renowned group performing Irish dance has visited Slovakia once this year but now heads for eastern Slovakia. After Spišská Nová Ves, it will dance in Košice, choreographed by its founder Michael Flatley.
