The Slovak Justice Ministry filed an extradition request on June 17 seeking the arrest and extradition of alleged Albanian drug mafia boss Baki Sadiki, who is believed to be in Kosovo, the TASR newswire reported, citing Justice Ministry spokesman Michal Jurči. Sadiki is being sought by Interpol.
Jurči said that the ministry has learnt that Sadiki has been staying in Kosovo since May 5. "The information was not published so that an arrest would not be thwarted," said Jurči, indicating that this is no longer the case. No other details are currently known about Sadiki, who is wanted on charges of illegal drug production in Slovakia. Early in the term of the outgoing government, Sadiki became a cause celébre in Slovakia when an alleged phone conversation from 1994 with former justice minister (now Supreme Court chairman) Štefan Harabin was released that appeared to show that the two men were on familiar terms with one another.
The Pravda daily reported in late March that, according to a source close to the special investigation team, Sadiki had been in hiding in Albania. Interior Ministry spokesman Erik Tomáš refused to comment on the case at that time.
