EP president calls on the future Slovak government to help Greece

If the European Union (EU) undertakes measures to assist Greece, this decision will have to be made by all eurozone countries, said European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek on Thursday, June 17, in reaction to reluctance shown on the part of the likely future Slovak government, the TASR newswire reported.

Buzek reacted to a journalist's question at the EU summit in Brussels. According to Buzek, during a crisis, the EU has to "do the right thing and not the easy one, because solidarity comes hand-in-hand with responsibility".

Swedish Premier Fredrik Reinfeldt said before the EU summit in Brussels that Slovakia should show responsibility when it comes to providing a loan to Greece, with the new government and parliament approving participation in joint eurozone action, TASR wrote.

Slovakia over the next three years should contribute €816 million to a total eurozone package of €80 billion, with Slovakia expected to send €306 million as early as this year. Prime Minister Robert Fico's government provisionally agreed to provide a loan, but a definite decision should be made by the parliament that will emerge from last Saturday's general election, TASR wrote.
