SaS deputies unveil a draft to curb mayors' salaries

Three MPs of the Freedom and Solidarity party (SaS), Szilard Somogyi, Ľuboš Majer, and Kamil Krnáč, believe that their colleagues in the Slovak parliament will support their blueprint governing the legal position and remuneration of mayors of villages and towns in the second reading even though the government is working on its own proposal on the issue.

"We put so much trust in this proposal, basing it on the current situation, that we would welcome full support of the ruling coalition," Somogyi told journalists on February 1.

The initial draft that had been advanced to a second reading in December has now been modified through an extensive amending proposal reflecting several comments and consultations.

The new rules reintroduce a cap for salaries of mayors which had been previously cancelled. The document stipulates a fixed salary lowered by ten percent from the previous coefficients, Somogyi explained to SITA. Bonuses of up to fifty percent of the salary were preserved but these cannot be granted in advance.

The three deputies suggest two- and three-months of severance pay instead of the current five-month salary depending on how long the outgoing mayor has served. The authors of the legislation estimate that their legislation would save €30-40 million. The representatives of the Slovak Association of Towns and Villages (ZMOS) who labelled the draft amendment as populist, presented themselves as "trade unions of Slovak mayors", Somogyi stated regarding their opposition to the draft.
