In the past 25 years, during which the occurrence of HIV has been monitored in Slovakia, 339 people have been officially recorded as HIV positive, reads a report on the national HIV/AIDS prevention programme that was acknowledged by the government on Wednesday, February 16.
More than 20 new cases appeared last year, the TASR newswire wrote. It is estimated that the real number of HIV-positive Slovaks is many times higher than the official figures indicate, however.
Clinical symptoms of AIDS have developed in 57 cases and epidemiologists have registered 37 AIDS-related deaths so far. The disease has been more often diagnosed in men than in women, especially in cities. Treatment for HIV patients is provided in Bratislava, Banská Bystrica and Košice.
