Austria wants construction of nuclear power plants in Mochovce and Temelín, Czech Republic, to be halted. According to the Austrian daily Osterreich, the cabinet of Chancellor Werner Faymann has already pressed charges against the Slovak and Czech governments at the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
The lawsuits are part of an Austrian action plan against nuclear power which was passed 12 days after the earthquake in Japan. The Slovak Ministry of Economy said it had not received official notification, and thus refused to comment on the story. Its spokesman Robert Merva told the Sme daily that no country can prevent another country from using nuclear energy.
The first and second blocks of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, which is operated by Slovenské Elektrárne, have been generating power for more than ten years, the SITA newswire wrote. In March the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD) issued a licence for the continued operation of the Mochovce blocks until 2021.
