The male nurse who reportedly helped a patient, age 63, to die has not appealed a court’s decision about detention and he has apparently decided to spend the investigation period in pre-trial custody, the Sme daily was informed by the spokesman of the Bratislava Regional Court, Pavol Adamčiak.
Private TV channel Markíza reported that the nurse had confessed to administering the drug, stating he wanted to help the dying patient. Jaroslav Dobiaš, the employee of University Hospital in Kramáre allegedly administered a drug to the patient to lower her blood pressure. She died shortly afterwards.
The police are now investigating whether there were any other deaths under similar conditions when Dobiaš was working, police forensic expert Peter Kováč told Sme. If the nurse acted on the patient’s request, this would be the first known case of assisted suicide or euthanasia in Slovakia.
Sme reported that Dobiaš had spoken about what he did at the hospital’s accommodation facility and later confessed to administering the drug to an investigator.
