Statistics Office: Over 5.3 million people participated in census

The Statistics Office (ŠÚ) has collected a total of 8.372 million forms from the census of people, houses and flats in Slovakia in May. 5.322 million of these concerned people and 1.980 million houses and flats, ŠÚ head Ľudmila Benkovičová said on Tuesday, June 28.

A total of 7.809 million forms were submitted in written form and 563,700 in electronic version (6.73 percent). More women than men took part in Slovakia's first ever electronic census. "A typical person registering in the census via the internet was a single, employed female aged 31-40 with a completed education," Benkovičová said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. The ŠÚ handled 12,654 calls and answered 5,038 e-mails during the census. The results should be announced in the autumn.

However, the ŠÚ also announced that at least 114,000 citizens have not been included in the census, the Sme daily wrote on June 29. Ten years ago, this number was assessed at 25,000. This year, the ŠÚ believes, the number might be even higher after all duplications are cleared; but it still should not exceed five percent of the whole population. In May, Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic criticised poor preparation for the census and flaws in documents. He did not comment on Tuesday’s preliminary results. The worst results were in Bratislava, where thousands of people are reported to have been missed by the census.

Benkovičová ascribed the flaws to an ‘anti’ campaign that appeared before the census and which discouraged some people from submitting the forms or sticking identification codes on them. She has expressed her satisfaction with the course of census under these circumstances.
