BUILDING a cycle bridge between Slovakia and Austria is again moving forward as an international commission of Austrian and Slovak representatives opened bid envelopes on June 27 for construction of the bridge across the Morava River to join Slovakia’s Devínska Nová Ves and Austria’s Schloss Hof. The TASR newswire reported that seven construction firms, Slovak as well as foreign companies, submitted bids.

“This is finally a certain move forward after some time-consuming bureaucracy from the past period of time,” Pavol Frešo, the president of Bratislava Region said, as quoted by TASR. “I believe that we will manage to keep the planned start of construction work scheduled for the autumn of 2011.”

The bridge will be constructed at the exact spot where a previous bridge stood and it will primarily serve cyclists, as it will interconnect bicycle routes on both sides of the border. Construction costs were projected at €5.16 million.
