Police officers charged after ignoring beating

An investigator from the Interior Ministry Inspectorate on Thursday, July 14, pressed charges against two police officers who failed to intervene in a beating in Zemianske Sady (Trnava Region) on Sunday, July 10.

Lucia Garajová from the Interior Ministry communications department said that the two police officers, who have been suspended, are accused of abusing the power of public officials and could face between two and five years in jail, the TASR newswire reported.

A group of men reportedly came to the house of a local resident at 5:00 with the intention of settling certain scores. A lawyer from Bratislava who happened to be at the scene reproached the men for making too much noise. Video footage from a security camera, which has been published in the media, clearly shows that the men then beat the lawyer up. Police who arrived at the scene did not, however, intervene. Moreover, the officers were allegedly addressed by the aggressors by their first names.

According to Garajová, the two officers were duty-bound to call for back-up so that they could deal with the incident. They took no action, however, when another fight took place. "After this incident, they failed to detain the suspects and so violated the basic duties of a police officer," said Garajová. The police simply told the initiators of the fight to go home, even though they knew them to be people with a criminal background. "Nobody should be allowed to commit crimes without punishment simply because they have contacts with police officers, politicians or businessmen," said Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic. The police officers were identified by the SITA newswire as Radovan H. and Patrik S. from Šoporňa.
