Slovakia’s telecoms regulator, the Telecommunications Office, decided on Tuesday, August 9, to prolong the licences of mobile-phone operators Orange and T-Mobile for a further ten years, Telecommunications Office spokesman Roman Vavro told the TASR newswire the same day. Both Orange and T-Mobile will have to pay a one-off fee, the size of which has not been disclosed.
The decisions have not yet come into effect, and the operators can appeal against the ruling. "An appeal will not mean the termination of operator services, however," said Vavro.
According to Vavro, the office made its decision in line with the EU regulatory framework and did not take into account any statements or "advice" published in the media. Independent MP Igor Matovič claimed recently that the operators will pay a ridiculously low amount to have their licences extended.
