Noted Slovak surprised seeing his bust on sitcom

WRITER, politician and publicist Milan Resutík saw a bust of his face, stolen a long time ago, on the TV sitcom ‘Mafstory’ that is regularly broadcast on the JOJ TV channel. “I changed channels and just by chance, I saw it there. I’m not making a big fuss out of it but I would like to know how it happened to get there,” said the former ambassador to Romania and Moldava to the Sme daily at the beginning of August.

“Several years ago, my garage in Bratislava was burgled. Nothing precious disappeared and I did not think of the bust – I did not even report it to the police,” he said. He dates the theft back to some time before 2006. The television serial has been using the bust of Resutík for some time and his friends keep seeing it, recognising him and joking about it.

“I don’t know what to do – if I started to protest, I would be funny,” Resutík said in summing up his feelings about the matter while also writing on his blog, “I also do not want the sculptor, the author of the bust and my friend, to think that I have somehow used his work and profited from it”. He thinks the best solution would be for JOJ TV to stop using the bust on the sitcom.

Resutík explained that there were originally two busts, both sculpted by Milan Struhárik. “He kept one of them; it circulated at some exhibitions and after some years the bust got superfluous and was just getting in his way so he gave it to me, as well,” Resutík said.

“We had no idea that there is an item stemming from a theft on the set of the Mafstory sitcom. We will try to find out about the matter and what can be done about it,” Stano Guštafík, the script editor for Mafstory, told Sme, adding that “I firmly believe that we will manage to investigate the origin of the bust”.

But he was not able to confirm for Sme who owned the bust and said he would need several days to find out how it got among the station’s props. “Until I learned that it was the portrait of Milan Resutík, I thought it was of Hemingway,” Guštafík said. “I will be glad if Mr. Resutík contacts me and we will try to find a solution.”
