Former mayor sold women into prostitution

The former mayor of the municipality of Žehra, in the eastern Slovak district of Spišská Nová Ves, has been convicted of selling women into prostitution in the Czech Republic.

The former mayor of the municipality of Žehra, in the eastern Slovak district of Spišská Nová Ves, has been convicted of selling women into prostitution in the Czech Republic.

Marián Mižigár, 41, who was elected mayor of Žehra in 2006, was sentenced to four-and-half years in prison, the Sme daily reported on Thursday, August 18. He had encouraged the women to go to the Czech Republic by saying that he could find work for them there; he was detained thanks to wiretapping conducted by the Czech police. During his trial the women in question withdrew their testimonies but Mižigár was still convicted.
