Dzurinda expresses disquiet over Tymoshenko case

Slovak Foreign Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda has joined critics of the legal process currently underway against Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the Sme daily reported.

“I said I was very concerned about the developments in the case,” said Dzurinda, as quoted by the daily, after meeting Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych. Last year, both Tymoshenko and Yanukovych competed in Ukraine’s presidential election.

Tymoshenko faces court action over an allegedly disadvantageous contract for the purchase of Russian gas which ended the gas crisis in 2009. Dzurinda drew a comparison with accusations he faced while prime minister for the sale of the Slovnaft refinery and the steel-making company Východoslovenské Železiarne, now U.S. Steel Košice.

“It was disadvantageous to the state, but the prosecutor’s office decided that the law was not violated,” Dzurinda added, as quoted by Sme.
