A much-awaited section of the R1 highway between Lehota and Tekovské Nemce in Nitra Region will not be finished as early as planned, the Transport Ministry announced on September 20, the Sme daily wrote.
It was planned to open the 45-kilometre section by September 28 but this apparently will not happen because the construction company will not manage to submit all the relevant documents on time.
The contractor, the Granvia company, has not filed all the necessary documents, Sme wrote based on statements by the ministry. It is crucial to finish the road at least before winter, Ľubomír Palčák, the head of the Transport Research Institute in Žilina, told Sme, adding that highways and dual carriageways have the lowest rate of road accidents.
Granvia did not comment on the reports. Sme wrote that the company faces a financial penalty in the form of fees that would not be paid for one month, about €10 million less than expected.
