The president of Slovakia’s national police force, Jaroslav Spišiak, faces prosecution, the Sme daily reported Wednesday, November 16, issue.

Deputy General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka told public broadcaster STV that three former police officers had filed a criminal complaint against Spišiak about spreading rumours that it would be possible to detain sought murder-suspect Karol Mello only once the officers in question left the force. Trnka added that it was probable that Spišiak would be prosecuted.

The three former officers had worked for the Office for the Fight against Organised Crime (ÚBOK).

In response, Spišiak commented that he had only learnt about the complaint from media reports but had not, so far, been asked to testify or explain his case, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.
