Some 10,000 people from Russia and the Ukraine are estimated to have chosen Slovakia as their holiday destination this winter, with the majority of them opting for a skiing holiday in the Low Tatras region.
Thirteen flights from Russia and seven from Ukraine are expected throughout the winter season, Ivana Herkelová from Poprad Airport told the TASR newswire.
“We estimate that during the last days of 2011 we will have arranged holiday stays in Slovakia for some 1,000 Russian-speaking tourists, and a few hundred more will arrive in January," TASR was told by Mark Blitshteyn of the Pilgrim Tour travel agency.
According to Blitshteyn, the fact that they can still get by using their own language is among the reasons why Russians keep returning to Slovakia.
