Former judge and Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) MP Jana Dubovcová was sworn in as Slovakia’s new ombudswoman by Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrušovský on Wednesday, March 28, the TASR newswire wrote.

Dubovcová replaces Pavol Kandráč, who served in the post for two five-year terms. While still an SDKÚ MP, Dubovcová was nominated for the post by the SDKÚ as well as Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Most-Híd. She was elected on December 13, 2011, when 76 out of 140 MPs backed her candidacy. As a result, Dubovcová had to withdraw her name from the SDKÚ slate for the March general election, as the post of ombudsman is supposed to be apolitical. Although she was elected to parliament in 2010 as an SDKÚ MP, she never formally joined the party.

She said she views her appointment to the post of ombudsman as the peak of her career. "I would like to perform as well as possible in this post, because I think that it's the right thing to do," Dubovcová said in a speech. Asked what her priorities and challenges would be, she pointed to undue court delays as well as to discrimination.
