Zita Táborská will become the new head of Slovakia’s Public Procurement Office (ÚVO) if approved by parliament, the government recommended at its session on May 23.

Proposed for the post by Prime Minister Robert Fico, Táborská has experience in the public procurement sphere and is considered a non-partisan appointment. She is one of the candidates shortlisted by the previous coalition government for the post.

Fico said he wanted to give the ÚVO post to a nominee named by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), as originally agreed, but that KDH did not reach an agreement with representatives of municipalities and employers, which was a pre-condition for KDH making a nomination.

"We aren't doing anything else but suggesting that parliament approve a person who was selected by the government of Iveta Radičová of the Slovak Democratic and Christina Union (SDKÚ)," Fico stated, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that "there apparently was no agreement" and the government cannot afford to wait any longer for the opposition to come to an agreement.

KDH failed to meet Fico’s condition of reaching an agreement on a candidate with the Union of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS) and the Union of Employers (RÚZ). KDH chairman Ján Figeľ sent a message on May 23 that Fico had disappointed him, the Sme daily wrote on May 24, writing that Fico did not discuss Táborská’s candidacy with either ZMOS or employers.

KDH MP Radoslav Procházka said, as reported by Sme, that he thought Figeľ had fallen for a trap by the prime minister, stating that it was predictable that Fico did not want to give the chair to an opposition nominee. After ZMOS rejected the first KDH nominee, the former head of the Statistics Office, Peter Mach, KDH proposed the former chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), Emil Kočiš. Employers had no objections to either but ZMOS head Jozef Dvonč (Smer) asked for a week’s time to take a stance on Kočiš. But Fico chose not to wait and started making steps, Procházka said, as reported by Sme.

Táborská has been an advisor regarding various tenders and participated in committees assessing projects such as the PPP for the R1 dual carriageway and building the new terminal at Bratislava Airport.
