Website reports Mello is seeking to fight expulsion from Belize
17 Jul 2012 Flash News
A news website in Belize, where Slovak fugitive Karol Mello is being held by police, has reported that he is seeking to fight his expulsion from the country. Mello is wanted in Slovakia in connection with an attempted gangland hit that resulted in the murder of a woman and young boy near Bratislava in 2004. The Belize website, 7newsbelize.com, reported on Tuesday, July 17, that Mello has retained a senior British lawyer (known as a Queen's Counsel) and local legal representation in order to represent him in his fight against expulsion from Belize.
7newsbelize.com wrote that Mello could claim that that he had entered Belize legally and is therefore entitled to some kind of hearing before he is expelled.
The 42 year-old suspect, who is wanted by Interpol and Slovak police, was arrested on July 11 after reportedly being in Belize for several months.
Mello spent several years evading arrest after the 2004 murders but was apprehended in Poland in 2010 and extradited to Slovakia. However, he was then released from custody by the Slovak courts in 2011 and immediately went on the run again.
