SaS to propose new legislation on same-sex registered partnerships

The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party plans to submit to next month's parliamentary session a bill that would partially make the registered partnerships of homosexual couples equal to those of married heterosexual couples.

The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party plans to submit to next month's parliamentary session a bill that would partially make the registered partnerships of homosexual couples equal to those of married heterosexual couples.

"This proposal addresses fundamental issues related to two people living together as partners," MP Martin Poliačik (SaS) said on Tuesday, August 14, as quoted by the TASR newswire. He explained that the bill also covers the issue of alimony. According to the proposal, same-sex partners will be proclaimed 'relatives', which will influence their rights in terms of inheritance proceedings as well as access to one another’s medical documentation.

SaS has so far discussed the proposal mainly with some MPs from the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) party. However, OĽaNO MP Erika Jurinová has made SaS aware that it cannot count on broad support from their party as there is no unified opinion on the matter among OĽaNO MPs. Despite the fact that SaS has not held talks over the proposal with the ruling Smer party, Poliačik said, it cannot be ruled out that Smer will support the bill. SaS is even ready to make "reasonable concessions" if Smer votes for at least some changes introduced through the proposed legislation. Liberals from SaS plan to present the proposal in detail next week. [SaS campaigned on this issue when it first entered parliament in June 2010 - ed. note]
