A blast at the Slovenské liehovary, a liquor distillery in Leopoldov (in the Trnava region) belonging to a company called Meroco, on Wednesday, August 22, killed a 40-year-old man and another man suffered serious burns, cas.sk news website reported.
Emergency Medical Service spokesman Boris Chmel told the TASR newswire that the injured man, 37, who suffered burns on 30 percent of the surface of his body, had to be taken to the hospital via helicopter. According to the latest information, an explosion of barrels containing fatty acids was caused by welders working nearby. A fire fighter at the scene said that there was no fire, only a blast. Witnesses said that they saw smoke rising from the area from several kilometres away, however.
The public address system in Leopoldov informed the public that, according to tests, the blast did not pollute the air.
