Slovak unemployment rate 13.6 percent in second quarter

The unemployment rate in Slovakia rose by 0.5 percentage points year-on-year to 13.6 percent in the second quarter of this year, according to data released by the country's Statistics Office (ŠÚ). The number of jobless people rose 11,500 from the second quarter of last year to 368,000 over the April-June period of this year, the SITA newswire reported, citing the ŠÚ.
According to another methodology that uses data on the population according to the 2011 census, the jobless rate in the second quarter grew 0.4 percentage points year-on-year in the second quarter and the number of people without a job surged by 14,800. The pace of unemployment growth accelerated from 2.2 percent in the first quarter to 4.2 percent in the second quarter of this year
In the first half of this year, unemployment grew 3.2 percent year-on-year to 374,200. The unemployment rate in the January-June period of this year rose by 0.3 percentage points to 13.9 percent. The ŠÚ reported that 62.9 percent of jobless people were unemployed for more than a year; of these, 169,200 had been without a job for more than two years. The number of unemployed people grew in most of regions in year-on-year terms, from 1.7 percent (Košice Region) to 14.8 percent (Trnava Region).
