Students support upcoming teachers’ strike
11 Sep 2012 Flash News
The University Student Council on Monday, September 10, released a statement in support of the teachers' strike scheduled for this Thursday. The council believes that the strike announced by teachers' trade unions will contribute towards bolstering the quality of Slovak education.
"The insufficient financial evaluation of teachers of primary schools negatively impacts the quality of education ... doesn't motivate teachers to better performance, with graduates of secondary schools not interested in continuing their studies at pedagogical university departments," the Council's statement writes as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The strike is set to take place on Thursday at all types of schools between 6:00 and 18:00. The teachers' trade unions request that salaries of teachers be increased to 1.2-2 times the average salary in the national economy. Based on recent figures, teachers in Slovakia earn an average of €770 per month. The average nominal salary in Slovakia is €793.
