UN Office for Refugees to relocate from Bratislava to Budapest
12 Sep 2012 Flash News
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Liaison Office in Bratislava will cease to function in Slovakia, amidst an increasing number of refugees here. A Budapest office will begin to deal with the issue as of January, the Pravda daily wrote. The decision was made by the UN Refugee Agency for Central Europe in Budapest.
Regional representative of UNHCR for central Europe Gottfried Koefner told Pravda that it would be nice to have an office in each country, but this is also a matter of resources. He added that Slovakia has had a low rate of asylum-seekers over the long term. Both the Slovak Interior Ministry and Foreign Ministry accepted the decision without serious reservations; but non-governmental organisations which cooperate with the UNHCR are not happy about it, Pravda concluded.
