Parliament again fails to elect Krnáč to NKÚ
19 Sep 2012 Flash News
Opposition nominee and former Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) MP Kamil Krnáč has again failed to be elected by MPs to serve as chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ). In a secret vote in parliament on September 18 he received only 63 votes from the 148 deputies present, the TASR newswire reported. The opposition has 67 seats in parliament, suggesting that all but four of them voted for Krnáč.
Krnáč was the only candidate; lawyer Milan Galanda, nominated by MP Mikuláš Huba of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO), withdrew his candidacy shortly before the vote.
The opposition blamed the ruling Smer party for its failure to support Krnáč's election. For a candidate to be elected, he or she requires a simple majority of all 150 MPs, i.e. 76 votes. Since Smer controls 83 seats, its support is required for any candidate to be successful. Prime Minister Robert Fico, who leads Smer, had previously promised that his party would support whichever candidate the opposition proposed.
“The first proof [of Smer's failure] is that the Socialists decided that the vote would be secret, although we could have voted in an open ballot,” said Pavol Frešo, leader of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), as quoted by TASR.
He added that the second proof was the result of the vote itself.
“If the Socialists had delivered the votes, the new NKÚ head would have been elected,” Frešo said.
Head of the SaS caucus, Juraj Miškov, alleged that Smer is afraid of financial supervision and is comfortable with the current situation, with the NKÚ's existing head, Ján Jasovský, more convenient for them than real supervision by an opposition nominee.
During a previous parliamentary vote in July Krnáč got the votes of only 53 of 146 deputies present in parliament, TASR wrote.
