Smer nominees Baka and Janas elected to ÚPN board
19 Sep 2012 Flash News
Smer nominees Igor Baka and Karol Janas were elected to the Administration Board of the Nation's Memory Institute (ÚPN) in parliament on Tuesday, September 18.
Janas was elected with 76 MP votes, whereas Baka received the support of 78 MPs, the TASR newswire wrote. They did not run on the Smer slate in March's general election. Other candidates vying for the posts were Stanislav Labjak, Jaromír Markech, František Neupauer (Confederation of Political Prisoners), Jana Španková (Freedom and Solidarity), Mária Sabolová (Christian Democratic Movement) and Jozef Vozár (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union).
The parliament held a vote to elect two new ÚPN board members because the terms of their predecessors expired on March 16 and April 20, 2012, respectively. Lawmakers already attempted to elect new members at a previous parliamentary session, but a range of issues surrounding ÚPN scuppered the vote.
