The speaker of parliament will enjoy more power, according to an amendment to the Rules of Procedure signed by President Ivan Gašparovič on Wednesday, October 31.

Parliamentary Speaker Pavol Paška will now be able to include new agenda items into the schedules of parliamentary sessions, as well as propose breaks after the end of parliamentary debates on individual issues, so that caucuses can hold consultations on upcoming votes. Smer wanted to amend the Rules of Procedure because, despite having a parliamentary majority, it cannot submit new agenda items to ongoing sessions. This can only be done with the support of at least three parliamentary caucuses, the TASR newswire wrote.
