There have been two fatalities so far, in addition to several injuries, after a bridge collapsed near Kurimany, in the Levoča district, Stanislav Strojný from the district fire brigade office told the SITA newswire. The bridge, which is currently under construction, fell at about 14:30 on November 2.

Rescue forces, including two helicopters, arrived at the scene to remove people from the debris. Rescuers have so far pulled out eight people, six of whom have serious injuries. They were transported to hospitals in Poprad, Levoča, Spišská Nová Ves and Košice, the Sme.sk website reported.

Information about the number of victims differs. While the spokesperson for the National Highway Company (NDS), which is the investor of the construction, Marcel Jánošík, says that there were about 18 workers on the bridge when it collapsed, other sources have estimated as many as 30, Sme.sk wrote.

The bridge is part of the cross-country D1 highway section between Jánovce and Jabolonov. Two construction companies, Váhostav-SK and Bögl a Krýsl, are working on the project. Jánošík said that NDS bears no responsibility for the collapse.

Jánošík added that they do not yet know what caused the bridge to collapse.
