The planned increase in the salaries of teachers and changes to the financing of schools may result in mass dismissals of school employees. Representatives of towns and villages plan to meet with Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič to discuss the issue on February 13, the TASR newswire reported.

“We are considering this possibility [of mass layoffs of teachers] ... half of schools will have financial problems,” said Bratislava Region spokesperson Iveta Tyšlerová, as quoted by TASR.

Košice Region spokesperson Zuzana Bobríková expressed similar sentiments, saying that around half of its 65 secondary schools would be in danger of having to make mass layoffs, which might affect up to 200 employees. She pointed out that the schools would also probably have to deprive teachers of their bonuses in order to increase their basic salaries.

“This means that in some cases, teachers will not in fact be provided with any of the declared 5-percent pay rise,” Bobríková told TASR.
