German carmaker Volkswagen will invest tens of millions of euros in production of hybrid electric cars in Bratislava. Company board member Michael Macht confirmed at the Geneva international motor show Auto Salon 2013 that plug-in hybrids would be made at VW’s Bratislava plant, the Hospodárske Noviny (HN) financial daily reported.
The announcement will affect production of hybrid versions of the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne SUVs. The Bratislava plant had been one of the potential bidders for the investment since last year. J&T Banka analyst Stanislav Pánis told HN that Bratislava’s qualified but cheap workforce, as well as its good past experience, were behind the success of the Slovak subsidiary.
