The Slovak Anti-Monopoly Office (PMÚ) collected almost €680,000 in fines last year, with additional fines imposed in 2012 exceeding €160,000, according to a report on the operation of the PMÚ acknowledged by the government on Wednesday, March 20.
The PMÚ dealt with 78 cases of potential violations of the rules of fair competition, making 38 decisions, the TASR newswire wrote. Most of these concerned mergers. One of the biggest mergers assessed last year involved Penta and Estate Consult, affecting the health-care industry. Thanks to the merger, Penta gained control of a number of hospitals in eastern Slovakia. However, the PMÚ did not find any breach of the relevant laws in that case.
