SHMÚ issues further flood alerts
3 Apr 2013 Flash News
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) forecast further heavy precipitation during the night of April 2/3. More than 33 millimetres of rain and snow were expected to fall in some parts of southern Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported on April 2.
“Regarding the extraordinary hydrological situation, existing snow reserves in river basins and the expected rains, we now estimate another rise in river levels,” hydrologist Michal Hazlinger told TASR, adding that the warning relates mostly to the Nitra, Ipeľ, Hron and Slaná Rivers.
The institute released several flood warnings. The SHMÚ announced a second-degree warning for the whole of Banská Bystrica Region, and some districts in Nitra and Trenčín Regions. The situation was expected to be critical in Levice district (in Nitra Region), where the hydrometeorologists declared the highest, third-degree warning, TASR wrote.
Slovakia was hit by heavy rain on March 30 and 31. In southern Slovakia the rainfall in some places reached 30-40mm. The low remaining capacity of river banks on the Nitra and Ipeľ Rivers triggered third-degree warnings.
