PRIME Minister Robert Fico has told the leadership of his party, Smer, that he wants to be the country’s president, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported in its May 29 issue. Fico and Smer’s press department were, however, quick to deny the report.

Hospodárske Noviny referred to three sources from Smer, saying that Fico announced his intention to run in the 2014 presidential election, but none of the sources were named.

Smer’s press department reacted immediately, saying that the information “is not true in its entire extent”.

“The party leadership never discussed this topic and the prime minister and Smer chairman Robert Fico never informed the leadership about his ambition to run for Slovakia’s president,” Smer’s spokesperson Monika Počátková wrote in the press release.
