Hundreds sign mass comment to election campaign draft bill
7 Aug 2013 Flash News
Civic activists have organised a protest against various voting measures proposed in a new election rules and campaign finance draft bill, including the reluctance of the state to send voters a list of candidates in elections by post.
According to new rules proposed by the Interior Ministry, voters should obtain such information only at the polling station. Activist Elena Pätoprstá said that at a meeting on Monday, Tuesday, August 6, the Interior
The mass statement also seeks to scrap several other measures, including the moratorium on election campaigning, the ban preventing subjects other than the parties involved from leading a campaign, the ban on publishing election poll results and limits on how much can be spent in a campaign. The so-called disputing procedure for the bill is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 7, afternoon at the Interior Ministry, the TASR newswire wrote.
The mass statement was initiated by the non-parliamentary Civic Conservative Party, OKS, and the first signatories include centre-right politicians from other parties. They claim “they want to, thus, fight against the limitation of freedom of speech and intervention in the free spread of information”.
Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák responded, according to TASR, that he was prepared to accept all sensible proposals that could improve the law, and secure better transparency and correctness. He added that the biggest debate on the matter will occur in parliament.
