13 Aug 2013 Flash News
Firefighters have managed to put out the large forest fire near the village of Betliar (Košice Region) after five days, the TASR newswire learned from the district headquarters of the Fire and Rescue Corps on Sunday, August 11.
The fire in the 'Volovské vrchy' mountains was put out shortly after noon on Saturday. Over 50 firefighters and 20 workers from the state-run forestry company Lesy SR combated the blaze. The main fire started on Tuesday, August 8, before 14:00 in the area of Stádielko in the Volovské vrchy. Around 50 firefighters were called in from several towns, with many volunteers joining in. Helicopters were also engaged because of the rough and difficult terrain. Forest vegetation covering 27.63 hectares was consumed by the blaze, incurring material damage of at least €76,500. No one was injured.
Investigators of the Rožňava district criminal police department have launched criminal proceedings concerning the fire, Košice regional police spokesperson Jana Mésárová told TASR. “The crime was committed on Tuesday at half past noon by a so-far unknown culprit who is believed to be - though perhaps just out of negligence - behind the extensive fire in the Betliar area," said the spokesperson.
