Flights to England and Turkey are most popular; flights to Prague could resume
13 Aug 2013 Flash News
London and Antalya, Turkey are the most popular destinations for Slovaks flying from Bratislava’s M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) general director Ivan Trhlík said on Monday, August 12.
London has topped the list among regular flights, with Antalya taking the top spot among charter or vacation flights. BTS served a total of 154,061 passengers bound for London in the first seven months of 2013, followed by Dublin with 55,101 passengers and Milan, Italy with 43,541 passengers. As for vacation flights, a total of 64,957 passengers flew to Antalya in the first seven months of 2013, with Burgas, Bulgaria ending as runner-up with 24,106 passengers and Hurghada, Egypt finishing third with 20,098 passengers.
Overall, 766,589 people used BTS in January through July 2013, a figure that amounts to a 3-percent drop (24,859 people), the TASR newswire reported, quoting Trhlík. BTS operates 30 regular and 39 charter flights. The airport saw a total of 1.42 million passengers in 2012, 1.59 million in 2011 and 1.67 million in 2010.
A direct connection between Bratislava and Prague could be re-established by autumn this year, TASR was told last week by Trhlík. “We are doing our best to proceed with the negotiations,” he said, adding that the airport is currently discussing terms with three possible carriers. “The problem is that the capacities of all three carriers are already used up to 100 percent. Another issue is scheduling new flights into an ongoing season,” said Trhlík, who adds that he is confident that these obstacles can be overcome. The flight connection between Bratislava and Prague – 329 kilometres – was terminated in August 2011 when Czech Airlines cancelled its flights
“It's necessary to support all air connections from Slovakia that are carried out via traditional carriers, not just this one,” said Antonín Kazda, head of the Air Transport Department at the University of Žilina. “If the connection is renewed, it's important that the departure times are well coordinated with those in Prague, so that the travellers can make their onward connections.”
