THE BRATISLAVA Beautification Association (BOS) plans to renew and re-open the section of Bratislava’s medieval wall that runs along Staromestská, from St Martin’s Cathedral to Kapucínska Street. The civic association plans to involve volunteer citizens in the project, and work began on August 10.
BOS head Maroš Mačuha informed the SITA newswire that the city walls, one of the capital’s cultural monuments, have been closed to the public for 12 years and are in a dilapidated state. Each year that maintenance on the wall goes ignored means an increase in expenses.
“The city walls are disrupted,” Mačuha said. “From the upper layer of the masonry, whole bricks are falling, threatening to damage cars on Staromestská Street.”
He added that the reconstruction is divided into several phases, the most urgent being the cleaning and removal of the overgrown weeds and plants, which is what the volunteers are being organised to do.
“We want to stretch a cloth that would catch the fragments of bricks,” Mačuha explained. “We also plan to remove the rotting wooden parts and [prevent people from entering the dangerous sections]. Afterwards, the wall could be opened to the public,” he concluded, adding that this could happen as early as next spring.
In the next phase, a blueprint for the renewal and re-use of the walls will be drawn up, and a tender for architectural design will be announced. After funding is received from grants, the walls will receive further reconstruction work. In the future, souvenir shops, cafes and wine-cellars could be opened to enhance the site. The space could also be used for film screenings or other social events.
The BOS is a civic association which seeks to preserve the historical values of the Slovak capital, improve the local environment and foster local pride. The renewed BOS perceives itself as a continuation of the original Beautification Association from 1868, and wants to contribute to the development of Bratislava.
