Firefighters in Bratislava responded to a fire that started near the hydrological laboratories of the Water Research Institute (VÚVH) on the Danube embankment, close to the PKO cultural venue, in the early morning hours of August 19. No victims or injuries have been reported so far. The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the fire was caused by waste deposited in the buildings, the TASR newswire reported.
The firefighters extinguished the fire at around 12:00, said Silvia Jančovičová, spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service, as reported by the SITA newswire.
The fire allegedly started in one of the unused buildings, from which it gradually spread to the VÚVH and the sports hall located in PKO. There are currently about 57 firefighters who working on putting out the fire, according to TASR.
A special expert group, established by firefighters, will investigate the cause of the fire, SITA newswire.
The fire has not damaged the hydrological laboratories, the main building of VÚVH and the National Reference Laboratory, which are fully functional. Immediately after the fire erupted the VÚVH halted the supply of electricity and water and closed off the building, the Environment Ministry informed in a press release.
Police closed the road in the direction of the town centre to traffic except for public transport, but passengers may expect some delays, said spokesperson for the regional police corps directorate in Bratislava Karina Považanová, as quoted by SITA.
Neither the ministry nor the Bratislava representatives were able to specify how much the damage will cost. Yet, the Sme daily reported on its website that it could reach around €330,000.
