President Gašparovič on official visit to Turkey
20 Aug 2013 Flash News
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič’s visit to Turkey, which began on Monday, August 19, could result in, among other things, the signing of a memorandum on closer cooperation in the energy sector.
The presidential couple was invited by Turkish President Abdullah Gul and on Tuesday Gašparovič will also meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and leading members of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. Meetings with the Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbas and governor of Istanbul Province Huseyin Avni Mutlu are scheduled for Wednesday, the TASR newswire wrote.
The discussions will be focused primarily on the development of bilateral cooperation, mainly in the areas of the economy, trade, investment, innovation and research, along with issues connected with the country's integration into the European Union. The official president's delegation also includes Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský, Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič, and chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) Jaromír Pastorek.
On Monday, Malatinský was commissioned at the cabinet's extraordinary session to sign the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation in Energy between the Slovak and Turkish governments. The Memorandum aims to diversify Slovak exports, strengthen economic cooperation in energy, and support and hasten the launch of energy projects involving Slovak companies working in Turkey. The Minister said that the joint Slovak-Turkish energy projects involve cooperation mainly with respect to thermal and nuclear power plants, as well as in the mining industry. The bilateral cooperation is expected to be coordinated by a working group that should meet every six months - alternately in Slovakia and Turkey. The document will be valid for five years and will automatically be extended by another five if neither of the signatories declares its intention to terminate the contract.
