Square for People breathes life into Bratislava’s Kamenné SquareAround Slovakia
2 Sep 2013 Compiled by Zuzana Vilikovská Regional News
ACTIVISTS from the Námestie pre ľudí (Square for People) initiative took command of the central square in Bratislava, Kamenné námestie, on August 17 to liven it up with an organised barbeque and to help make it a prettier place.
The square is slated for redevelopment.
In the afternoon snacks were offered under the old empress tree (Paulownia tomentosa), as well as workshops and theatrical performances for children, with a concert by Martin Doman Belcanto, Chick & Tin and Lavalier in the evening.
The event was organised by the civic initiative Square for People (namestiepreludi.sk website) and the civic association Cyklokoalícia (cyklokoalicia.sk) to beatify the public space, which they claim is one of the most neglected sites in the Slovak capital, and to enliven it with diverse family-oriented events. The Square for People initiative has been collecting ideas and complaints about the space from local inhabitants. This year it has organised various activities, like the “Adopt a Plant Pot” project, for which people planted flowers and plants in the abandoned, empty concrete planters that line the square.
“In 2012, we collected 600 suggestions about what the future of the Kamenné Square could be,” Dominika Belanská of the civic association told the TASR newswire. “It is also thanks to these suggestions that we try to bring improvements aimed at cultivating and enlivening this space.”
