5 Sep 2013 Flash News
The growth in unemployment in Slovakia slowed down from 4 percent in 1Q13 to 3.3 percent in the 2nd quarter of the year, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced. Compared to Q2 2012, the number of unemployed people increased by 11,900 to 380,000 and the unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage points to 14 percent.
The number of unemployed rose year-on-year in most regions, with only Žilina and Košice regions seeing unemployment fall. Banská Bystrica and Prešov regions contributed the most to the overall unemployment rate. In the first six months of this year, unemployment in Slovakia grew by 3.6 percent to 387,800 people. The unemployment rate increased by 0.4 percentage points to 14.3 percent for the first half of the year.
In terms of age, the largest group of unemployed totalling 115,200 people, and 30.3 percent of the total, was aged 35-49 years, the SITA newswire wrote. However, unemployment grew most among 55 to 59-year-olds. The ŠÚ recorded a decrease in unemployment only in the age group of 25-34 years, which dropped by 4.1 percent and those over 60 years, which fell 9.1 percent.
