Lajčák to meet EU foreign ministers and US Secretary of State Kerry
6 Sep 2013 Flash News
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák leaves for Vilnius to attend an informal meeting of foreign affairs ministers of European Union member states on September 6. US Secretary of State John Kerry is slated to attend part of the meeting as well.
“Ministers will address the ongoing crisis in Syria and especially an international response to the chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21 this year,” the SITA newswire quoted the statement from the Slovak Foreign Ministry. EU ministers will also discuss the political and security situation in Egypt and the state of Middle East peace negotiations. The programme also includes discussions on the Eastern Partnership and preparations of important decisions for the upcoming EU summit in Vilnius in November 2013.
Lajčák wants to be considered for the position of UN secretary general - which will be vacant after incumbent secretary general ends his term in 2016, the Sme daily wrote in its September 6 issue. Lajčák allegedly mentioned it in unofficial talks and representatives of the US Embassy to Slovakia informed the US Department of State before the summer.
Lajčák didn’t officially deny his interest, Sme writes, and the statements of his spokesman, Boris Gandel, imply it is true. Gandel said that Lajčák wants to dutifully fulfil his tasks in his current position; which end in April 2016.
