Slovak wins prestigious British drawing prize
13 Sep 2013 Compiled by Spectator staff Culture & Society
SVETLANA Fialová, a Slovak artist living in London has won the UK’s largest and longest-running annual prize for drawing. The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 jury choose her ink on paper drawing, Apocalypse (My Boyfriend Doesn’t Care), from more than 3,000 entries submitted this year. The top award, apart from the associated prestige and fame, is also a cheque for £8,000 (€9,500). The award ceremony took place September 10 in London.
“I have a feeling that this is really only because of my work and not some contacts,” said Fialová as cited by the Sme daily. “It is an enormous encouragement and, of course, money is also super because I can keep drawing.”
Fialová was born in Košice in 1985. The prize was awarded for Apocalypse (My Boyfriend Doesn’t Care), an ink portrait of her boyfriend “in an apathetic pose, pulling chewing gum out of his mouth”, the award’s website writes.
“In my practice, I usually get inspired by themes which draw on popular culture, the internet, TV, magazines or urban legends combined with invented characters,” Fialová said. “This work is based on a more intimate and personal moment. It captures my boyfriend in an apathetic pose, pulling chewing gum out of his mouth. Background scenes including fragments from Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse series, an unhealthy amount of Crocs shoes and the apotheosis of the cats all make a fitting setting for his current mood.”
Svetlana Fialová divides her time between London and Prague and is studying for a PhD at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava.
The Jerwood Drawing Prize is being awarded since 1994 with an aim to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of contemporary drawing. It is open for all artists living in the United Kingdom, either temporarily or permanently.
