New mobile operator to enter the market
17 Dec 2013 Flash News
THE operator Telekom was the most successful in the auction of frequencies for fast mobile networks of the fourth generation (4G), the Sme daily reported.
Thanks to the frequencies it gained, Telekom will be able to provide mobile Internet at the speed of about 130 megabits per second, which is comparable to optical connection, according to Sme. In other words, Telekom operators will be able to download a movie in a minute’s time from their mobile internet.
Telekom was the most successful among operators, followed by an unknown company. The Telecommunications Office refused to speculate on who the fourth operator is, Sme wrote.
The auction ended two weeks ago, but none of the operators can comment on its outcome until the Telecommunications Office officially publishes the results, Sme wrote. The Office is waiting for the one-month-long period for issuing licences to the successful companies to elapse. Then the Office must wait whether the operators appeal against the distribution of licences. If they don’t, the official results could be known at the beginning of 2014, according to Sme.
The state will earn more than expected on the new frequencies. While the original price of the frequencies auctioned was €142.2 million, the actual revenue is around €210 million.
The licences for the companies who bought them will include a commitment for them to cover at least one quarter of the country’s population with 4G network by the end of 2015.
