Another automaker possibly eyeing Slovakia
15 Jan 2014 Flash News
YET another automotive producer might be looking to invest in Slovakia in 2014.
In 2013, over 980,000 cars were produced in Slovakia, according to the Association of the Automotive Industry (ZAP), representing a 5.8-percent increase compared with the previous year, the TASR newswire reported.
“While in Europe there are forecasts of a drop in automotive production in 2013, in Slovakia we had an increase by almost 6 percent,” ZAP president Jaroslav Holeček said, as quoted by TASR. He expects Slovakia’s automotive industry to be equally successful in 2014, although he admitted that the number of cars produced might be lower because some manufacturers are planning to make model changes.
“We are nearing the limits of our production capacities,” he said, adding that a new automotive plant would have to emerge in Slovakia in order to increase the number of cars produced in the country.
US electric car producer Tesla Motors is planning to build new production facilities in Europe and Asia, and the company could be looking into Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported, citing an anonymous source.
Tesla already has one European plant located in the Netherlands.
Slovak authorities did not confirm whether they were involved in discussions about a new automotive investment in the country. Holeček, however, confirmed that unofficial talks with automakers are underway, but not with Tesla, SITA wrote.
