Slovakia to send more troops to Afghanistan
19 Feb 2014 Flash News
SLOVAKIA is planning to dispatch up to another six soldiers to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, according to a proposal drafted by the Defence Ministry that has been submitted for inter-departmental review.
The servicemen to be sent to Afghanistan form part of the Deployable Communication and Information Systems Module (DCM-C) unit, integrated into NATO structures. The Slovak soldiers will join the mission based on a NATO request and will be tasked with providing assistance to communication and information system services at ISAF headquarters, the TASR newswire reported.
The estimated costs of deploying the soldiers amount to €197,823. This will be covered from Defence Ministry coffers.
Approximately 87,000 soldiers and experts from 49 countries are currently stationed in Afghanistan within the ISAF mission, which is in its final phase as it is scheduled to be terminated at the end of 2014. NATO is expected to continue running operations in Afghanistan after the ISAF mission is concluded in a support and advisory capacity, however. A total of 291 Slovak soldiers are currently taking part in the mission.
