THE BRATISLAVA-based SWWE company has resurrected its €40-million plan to build 12 wind turbines near the Babín village in the Orava region. The firm first introduced the plan four years ago, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.

SWWE needs to obtain permission to fulfil its plans. In the past the then Badin mayor and civic activist Peter Laťák was against construction of the turbines arguing that this source of energy is harmful. Laťák was later withdrawn from his function in a referendum and SWWE filed a criminal complaint against him. A potential referendum in which Babín’s citizens vote on whether to allow wind turbines or not is being discussed.

In Slovakia, generating electricity from wind energy is a rarity. The first wind power station with four turbines was built in Cerová. Its installed capacity is 2.6 MW.
