THE POPULARITY of Slovakia among Austrians as a tourist destination is growing. The number of visitors to Slovakia’s accommodation facilities from Austria increased from 50,000 in 2009 to 66,000 in 2013, the TASR newswire reported.
Austrians often go to Slovakia to visit spas or aqua parks. Tourists mostly come from Vienna and its vicinity due to good transport connections and awareness of the offers in Bratislava and Slovakia for tourists.
Representatives of tourism in Bratislava report an increase in the number of Austrians visiting Bratislava and its vicinity. The number of overnight stays increased by almost 15 percent during the first three quarters of 2013 compared with the same period of 2012, while the total number of visitors increased by more than 11 percent.
“[Austrians are] our close neighbours; he/she is naturally interested in Slovakia and he/she only needs to get information about what he/she can do in Slovakia,” Alžbeta Melicharová from the Bratislava destination management organisation Bratislava Region Tourism said, as cited by TASR.
